Preamble
The requirements for this award are that candidates
- Pass the CESA paper, Business Administration , which equates to the three competencies from the Specialist Administration domain
- Submit to the Examination Supervisor the Annotated Bibliography as described in the Examination Specification
- Submit to the Society's RPL Committee evidence to meet two additional competencies from the Specialist Administration domain
- Submit evidence of another three units from the Business Services Training Package or any other endorsed Training Package, of which a minimum of two units must be from a qualification at Diploma level; one unit may be included from a lower or higher level in this qualification.
Examination conditions
Candidates must complete one paper, Business Administration. Candidates may write their answers by hand or use a computer. Assessment techniques used will be observation during the examination, practical exercises, and case studies. As part of the examination, candidates must submit an annotated bibliography and substantiated evidence that those competencies have been practised in the workplace.
Candidates must:
- provide their own materials
- submit satisfactory work in order to pass. Honours and Credit grades will be awarded in appropriate cases.
Candidates should make themselves familiar with the general conditions governing CESA Diploma of Business Administration examination regulations. Attention is directed particularly to those relating to:
- Completing all requirements for the qualification within the time limits
- Making notes during reading time
- Using reference books, computer facilities, and other resources
- Being allowed printout time at the end of the examination when any part of it is taken on a computer
The test environment
The test environment shall be reasonably comfortable to allow candidates to perform at the best level possible, free from distraction. The room in which the test is conducted shall be adequately lighted and ventilated and desks shall be large enough to accommodate the candidate's equipment. Each candidate requires an individual workstation and computer, and access to a printer and appropriate manuals. Candidates may use a calculator, an English language dictionary, and a calendar.
Details of the one paper required are as follows.
Written examination Business Administration
Time allowed: 3 hours, plus 10 minutes for reading.

The Training Package requires candidates to meet a minimum of FIVE units from the Specialist Administration domain. The Business Administration paper will cover THREE of those units of competencies, which are:
- BSBADM502A Manage meetings
- BSBADM503A Plan and manage conferences
- BSBADM504A Plan or review administration systems
Candidates who have achieved the Payroll competency, BSBADM505A will be given credit towards the Diploma requirements in the Specialist Administration domain.
Competencies BSBADM501A, Manage the establishment and maintenance of a workgroup network AND BSBADM506A, Manage business document design and development can be demonstrated by recognition or prior learning and experience.
Conditions
- This examination will be conducted under the supervision of the Commercial Education Society of Australia.
- Candidates can use the reading time to plan responses by making notes on the examination paper.
- Using a computer with a word processing package is an advantage because it saves time but candidates can also use electric or manual typewriters, or handwriting to undertake the examination.
- Candidates will not be allowed to print out after "time" is called unless their files have been sent to the printer. Editing is not permitted after "time" is called.
- A calculator, dictionary and documents such as copies of specific legislative requirements and/or Acts can be brought into the examination. Candidates can use this material for reference. The Examination Supervisor is required to check all documentation brought into the examination to ensure it is reference material. Documentation checks must be completed before the 10 minutes of reading time begins.
Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography will contribute 15% to the graded mark allocated by The Commercial Education Society of Australia.
Candidates must compile and submit an annotated bibliography for examination and assessment on the date of the written examination.
The annotated bibliography must include at least five references which contain information relating to the three competencies being examined AND that are:
- listed alphabetically by title, author, publisher/producer/s, date of publication or production
- researched, read/viewed/heard and used by the candidate to prepare for this examination
- currently available to the public
- published or produced since January 2000
- supported by a description (approximately 70-100 words) of its suitability as a reference for one or more units of competency above
Portfolio - Third Party Report
The portfolio will contribute 25% to the graded mark allocated by the Commercial Education Society of Australia
Candidates must prepare and submit a portfolio that will provide evidence (including a third-party report) of their ability to demonstrate competence in the following Specialist Administration competencies:
- BSBADM501A Manage the establishment and maintenance of a workgroup network
- BSBADM506A Manage business document design and development
The candidate's portfolio:
- must provide sufficient evidence for the candidate's competence to be examined and assessed
- can include documents produced by the candidate such as manuals, checklists, policy and procedures, skills maps, assignments and projects
- must also include a third-party report that has been signed and dated by the writer of the report
- must be signed by the candidate's supervisor as endorsement that all documents submitted are samples of the candidate's own work
- must show evidence of the candidate's ability to consistently perform tasks in a range of situations and over a period of time
Presentation of portfolio
The name and contact address of the candidate must be marked clearly on the portfolio.
The portfolio must be submitted on the date of the examination to the supervisor who will:
- accept the completed portfolio from the candidate
- issue the candidate with a copy of the signed and dated receipt for the portfolio
- dispatch the portfolio to the Commercial Education Society of Australia
Candidates are advised to keep a copy of their portfolio, as The Commercial Education Society of Australia must hold the original documents.
